stockton350, keep making videos
Nice centerpulls. Was just reading about a Raleigh Randonneur in Reynolds 703/8?
90s hybrids such as these Bridgestones and higher spec'd Trek and Specialized models, especially the steel versions, are truly fantastic all-around bikes once restored. Some have really good period Shimano components such as the 400 and 700CX groups which were made specifically for higher end hybrid bikes,
I think it's just a matter of the company meeting the market demands. People want suspension. I had a neighbor once tell me that he had to have a suspension fork for riding city streets. I had coworker tell me that he needed full suspension on his Mongoose because his weight would break a normal bike from his riding it off of curbs. He said that even then, the bike didn't last long. A lot of people just don't know better. I would probably have some suspension if I didn't have the inclination to research things. I wanted a bike for commuting so,I started reading bikeforums (I always say that if you want to learn about something, a good place to start is with the geeks, as someone who is into it can provide a lot of insight)., which led me to other sources. When I learned that suspension forks were heavy and energy inefficient, I realized that it wasn't suited for my kind of riding. Had I not done my research, I'd probably have a suspension fork, and probably wouldn't know any better.
and when they show pictures of some bikes they only show pictures from a distance and the side of the bike is the side that does not have the gears so you do not know if the chain is all rusted or damaged
I have a Motobecane Citybecane in the project lot do list that has a double up front but canti brakes. It also has the BMX style gooseneck stem and bars with motorcycle inspired handgrips. It is a basket case.
Ooh that’s truly an odd one. A heliomatic hub, too. www.bulgier.com/pics/bike/Catalogs/Motobecane/84/15_City-Becane.jpg My theory is that companies were seeing if they could market MTBs to casual riders with a kind of cross between road and mountain bikes that eventually became the hybrid market.
@@stockton350 did not know that, mine did not come without rims/tires from a pile of junk when I was buying another bike
Really nice looking lugged frame! I would turn it into a 1x or even a single speed, keep the giant knobby tires and have a really cool cruiser bike.
I like the 1x idea!
This one was $50. It needs a bit of work, though. Do you think it was worth it?
You know you're a bike nerd when you consider putting a Brooks on a trash/parts bin bike lol

That first Raleigh looks more like a barn find.
The rockhopper has one piece bull moose bar/stem which are pretty hard to find. I recently picked up a 1984 Peugeot which had them stock and paid $150, in Raynham. www.nps.gov/yose/learn/nature/tuolumne.htm

Who makes those grips? The bike looks beyond great!
Thanks! It started a little rough but is a lot of fun to ride. I got those grips from aliexpress. www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006887190814.html
90's rigid, north road bars and 2" tyres make for a very comfortable ride.
Agreed! For me, the raised stem also improves comfort a lot.
Twice in a week a mention of Pittsfield. My grandmother was from there.
Cool. Really nice people out that way.
Where I live you couldn't sell any of these bikes for 2$ Big cities are have weird fauna...
Yes, big flat cities are prime real estate for flipping bikes. Whereabouts are you?
Thanks for this video! I’m putting a Postino on my ‘89 MTB. Nice to see how it looks from different views!
@@eugenemcgloin6780 Nice! Good luck with your build. I’m really happy with the handlebars!
This guy really doesn't know what he is talking about. the Diamondback Edgewood is a great bike. It is very durable and rides smooth.
nice video youtube recommended for me
Gallium works well. Seems scary since it looks like Mercury, but it's relatively easy to use. Scratch up the inside of the post and level the seat tube on the bike stand, horizontal to the floor. Put the gallium inside the seat post itself and let it sit overnight. Spindat has a pretty good video on that too.
Or use an impact wrench, see RJ the bike guy
I hadn’t heard of that before. Looks interesting. I tried impact, pb blaster, locking it up in a vice and turning it, etc. I’m pretty sure nothing mechanical is going to get it out so it’ll have to be destroyed, which leaves cutting and chemicals. I’m going to start with carefully using a saw (which RJ has a good video on) but then might move onto some mad scientist stuff.
@@stockton350 rotation with impact wrench is the key, albeit it requires cutting the seapost clamp and the impact socket to make a robust bonding. Rotational force should be a less harmful way.
@@stockton350 Sawing the seat post lengthwise can still leave the pieces 'welded' to the frame. Then you'll have to peel them out with a hammer and chisel, which really isn't fun.
That is a heck of a find. That is a great townie or commuter bike.
I think you got a pretty good deal.
Yes definitely
If I didn't have so many projects I would do the drive
I'd say it's worth the drive, kuwahara bikes are pretty nice bikes.
Throw some high pressure tires on it call it a day.
$50
Chrome Diamondback for the win!
Hands down 🎯
That would be my choice too, my size!
Full disclosure. Don't try to change that back wheel. Anything close to modern will be too wide for it. So be ready to stretch the dropouts
Good to know. With the granny gear, the gearing is pretty good so I think I'll just keep it as is.
Vy-kount, FTLOG...
You should also note Danish butter cookies are usually made in Indonesia...
Wow. I stand corrected. Thanks.
These videos are so much fun! Feels like hanging out at the bike shop and talking to the guys there. I'm from Ohio - you'd probably get some fun results if you looked at Cleveland, Akron or Columbus. Keep it up!
Glad you're enjoying them. Just trying to put some entertainment out in the world. Great suggestions. Definitely stay tuned for the next one!
I have an 86 Rockhopper that has many of the same features like the stem. The brake levers and grips look like what you might find on a motorcycle! Still runs, it’s my semi daily ride and I’m even using some original components.
@@charlesblithfield6182 That's a fabulous bike. Awesome how these bikes are still out there, alive and kicking!
You know it is worth $75.🙄 😊❤
nice bike, would look better if you dropped the stem down a bit, maybe an inch or inch and a half. It looks a bit dorky as is😂😂
Ha. I didn't notice that but now I can't unsee it.
That onevlooks clean !
I'd buy that bike for $75
$75 is a deal for sure
very cool bike .. not many 26" come with the eye lids in the forks
Glad you like it. Yeah I don't see that too much. I don't do enough hard core bike packing to need them but I think they're fun to have. 🏕️🚴🏿♂️
Beautiful color, and with the color matched stem 👨🍳💋
Glad you like it!
We have 'ghost bikes' here in the UK too.
Do you call them ghost bikes also?
@@stockton350 Ghost, or Memorial Bikes, I believe!
@@MrMisaKulicka Thanks!
Shimano or Dia Compe U-brakes will work on roller cam bosses and are very good brakes from a stopping power perspective.
Good point. I was looking at some old Specialized catalogs where u brakes were featured on their highest racing MTBs in fact.
Not in the least. You did what any flipper would do; added value to thr product. I have bought bikes for $50 and overhauled down to the frame and relist them at $200. A few sellers come back and offer me $50 again because it is usable. Nope, not happening.
That’s what I thought but, like those sellers, I guess my seller didn’t get the value of the work/parts put in. Offering an additional $50 definitely shows how people don’t get it sometimes.
My guess is that a lot of hipsters have moved to Asheville in recent years, they brought their single speeds/fixies with them, then realized that Asheville is way too hilly to bikes without gears, so they're getting rid of them.
I like this theory. Fixies can be a lot of fun until they aren’t.
Conform to the laws of physics! Love it!
I don't think Miyatas are underrated as far as vintage touring bikes go.
Joseph City has about 40 bicycles from one guy. Don't buy his Trek for $40 that's mine.
We all need a Joseph nearby in our bike lives.
It’s not photoshopped on the first one it’s just the handle bar going into the bush
Oh. My. God.
Hahaha I experienced the full spectrum of.. is it cut? is it photoshopped? then finally concluding it's just in a bush. Not a great photo for selling the bike, that's for sure.
That was my first thought but stockton350 convinced me and I believed it was photoshopped 😭
